Steak and Pepperjack Sub

This is my husbands favorite Zone meal. I use skirt steak, but it would be great with flank steak or tri-tip as well. Just make sure you slice the meat into small strips so it is easier to eat on the sandwich. Place a 1/2 slice of pepper jack on the roll before you put the meat and peppers and place another 1/2 slice on top. Place the rolls in the oven (400 degrees) for about 5-6 minutes.
Steak and Pepper jack Sub- 3 blocks
1/2 whole grain roll- (1 1/2 blocks carb)
3 oz skirt steak cut into strips- (3 blocks protein)
1/2 green pepper and 1/2 red bell pepper sauteed- (1/2 block carb)
1 slice pepper jack cheese (2 blocks fat)
Serve with salad or side carb of your choice. Post thoughts to comments.

  2. quick question...ok, so everyone knows i've been struggling with the zone and crossfit forever. i've been thinking about why and noticed that one of my problems is always a quick run to the grocery store. i make a list but it's usually what my husband needs for his lunches and not things i should be eating.

so...say you were going to the grocery store one fine day. what would you buy? do you make a menu for one week and then buy accordingly? because i tried that and it just didn't work.

...i think i need 'THE ZONE FOR DUMMIES'...

    haha!

    Thanks,
    Sakura

  3. Sakura,
I do not have a pre-planned menu for the week because that does not work for me either...I generally buy a variety of proteins-chicken, ground turkey, pork and some beef, and LOTS of veggies and salad stuff. I am big into broccoli slaw right now because you can use it in so many things. Buy the foods that you know you like and zone your meals from there. If you buy stuff you know you won't eat or is too hard to make you are setting yourself up for failure. I may do a post on a grocery list because lots of people have asked me about it. You will notice that I cook with alot of the same foods and just change what I put them with. It makes it easier and I know I will like it. Keep it REALLY simple when you are first starting out! Hope that helps!

Did you prepare the meat on the BBQ? We'll definitely be trying this one at home!

  5. Katie,
We did grill it and then baked the sub at the end to melt the cheese on top. Very yummy!

  6. thanks, michele! i look forward to that post if you decide to do so. i have done what you said--bought foods that were zone but not ones that i usual ate.

i was thinking of going zone/paleo but i want to get the zone down first. giving up dairy is hard! and so i sugar...and bread...haha! you don't realize how much of it you have until you try not to have it.
