Pita Taco's

This is a quick 2 block lunch if you have leftover turkey taco meat. Very filling and tasty! By substituting pita bread for taco shells, you save yourself a lot in carb blocks! If you want this for dinner, just make sure you add a block of protein, fat and carbs to bring it up to three blocks.
Pita tacos- 2 blocks
1 whole wheat pita pocket- (1 1/2 blocks carbs)
1/8 cup kidney beans (1/2 block carbs)
3 oz turkey taco meat (1 1/2 oz each) (2 blocks protein)
6 cashews (2 blocks fat)
Mixed greens are negligible due to small amount used. Post thoughts to comments.

  1. Mmmm... I am ready for a yummy zone ice cream snack. What exactly would that look like? :)

  2. This doesn't necessarily pertain to this meal, but I have a question about fruit. Do you subtract the fiber (for the carb count) in the fruit as well the same way you do for bread & beans?

  3. Kim-
The thought of Zone ice cream makes me scared...BLAHHHHH:)

Anonymous- If you are eating "real" fruit (as opposed to dried or packaged) I would say that it is near impossible to take that into account. If you are eating dried fruit (which tends to have alot of sugar) and you have a label to follow you could subtract out any dietary fiber in that.

  4. Anonymous: Technically the same principle applies to all food. This site has been helpful to me to find the nutritional content of fruits/veggies and other nonpackaged/labeled foods:

But most of us follow a handy block sheet that agrees with the nutritional data that tells us that for example:
1 med apple contains 25g of carbs 4 g of fiber which means 1/2 apple is aprox 1 block carb.
    strawberries: 1 block
    12 g carbs 3 g of fiber for 1 cup
    Grapes: 3 blocks
27 grams carb, 1 gram of fiber for 1 cup

So yes, you do subtract the fiber. And as in the above examples of fruit (strawberries vs. grapes), the more fiber in any food "the better" (digestive/heart health, lower glycemic) ,and more volume you can have. And that is a good thing.
    Hope that helps.
I know Michelle... i'm officially a zone nerd.

  5. Thanks Michelle that does help!
BTW Can you post some more pictures of lunches?
