I attended the Robb Wolf nutrition seminar this weekend at CFSCC. It was amazing! However, my head is spinning and quite frankly I think I need a day or two to wrap my brain around some of this information. In the meantime...I want you all to ask yourselves what it is you want out of your nutrition? Do you want to look better or perform better or both? Are you getting that right now? Think about this a bit...what do you like an dislike about how you are eating, and are you willing to be open to change? Post thoughts to comments.
My goal is to do a muscle-up and a few handstand push-ups, and if looking better comes as a result of that (and we know that it will), then so be it. I have had it with my on-again-off-again approach to the Zone, and this seminar was just what I needed to really push me over the edge. Robb is so inspiring that he just makes you want to do him proud, so as of today, no grains.
You're right Michelle, there was a huge amount of information, and I still need to process it too. I'm also trying to wrap my head around what I actually can and cannot do. For example, it would be too hard to just go cold off of dairy right now, so I'm not doing that . . . but I would really like to know a sort of good, better, best approach to these situations. Good being some dairy -- better being only dairy from grass-fed cows -- best being no dairy. That sort of thing. Or is grass-fed diary just as good as no dairy because you're eliminating the gluten? Not expecting an answer here. Just wondering about this stuff on many different levels.
I would like both. Something which catalyzes fat loss and energizes me to improve my performance at CF.
I am zoning right now (not strict though), but the progress has slowed down considerably. Seems like some change is needed to push things forward.
So.....is wheat free the same as gluten free? Does Robb recommend no spelt? This is confusing, and a bit depressing as I walk by the freshly baked bread at Whole Foods getting almost knocked down by the delicious smell. I will say that there are some great recipes on Robb's website as well as an interesting youtube video on what Paleo eating is.....Always looking to learn!!!
Anon- wheat free is not the same as gluten free. Gluten free includes wheat, spelt, rye, oats and millet. The good news is there are many options out there that are gluten free.
I'm so lucky to be part of his gym here in Chico. He does these monthly nutrition talks which is good for educating the community.
Robb talks about being Gluten, Dairy, Wheat and Soy free. He also push hard about eating foods that are lower on the glycemic level, and taking those fish oils.
I'm finding that you can still enjoy regular foods. I've made Paleo Pumpkin Pie, I've baked Paleo Chocolate Raspberry Muffins. You can still enjoy Paleo style pancakes. Even in my super busy schedule, I've found time to make my meals in the kitchen instead of going out. I've also found that once you start eating paleo, your body will not crave those carbs and dairy over time. There was a point in time where I could polish off a block of cheese in one sitting; or couldn't go a day without my greek yogurt. Don't even get me started on the carbs. I haven't had any diary and hardly any gluten in over 3 months and quite honestly, I don't even miss it. I feel way too damn good.
My point is, that anyone can do paleo and it does get easier the more you do it. The hardest part is starting, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. One of the trainers at the gym told me that it took her about 2 years to nail down the diet, so it helps to know that no one expects you to change overnight.
Besides, when it comes to any sort of diet, if you don't like what you're eating, you're not going to stick to it.
